Forţa unei naţiuni se probează în momente critice. Britanicii au avut parte de o porţie de otravă la doar o zi distanţă de exuberanţa declanşată de obţinerea dreptului de a organiza Olimpiada din 2012. Extremiştii au suflat în lumânările aprinse pe tortul dedicat victoriei olimpismului. 7 iulie a fost Ziua Infamiei pentru londonezi. Teroriştii au lovit chiar în inima Londrei, ucigând şi rănind sute de nevinovaţi. După un model sinistru, simbolurile acestei ţări au fost ţintele pentru cei care s-au acoperit de dispreţ. Bombele au explodat în autobuzele şi în metroul londonez, provocând groază şi uimirea întregii lumi. Iată că şi într-un sistem de protecţie bine pus la punct, considerat drept cel mai performant din lume, pot fi făcute breşe. De aglomeraţia londoneză s-au folosit războinicii Al-Qaeda. Au lovit cu o cruzime care ne-a reamintit de carnagiul provocat în Statele Unite în 11 septembrie 2001 şi de atacurile din trenurile spaniole în 11 martie de anul trecut. Dar acum, spre deosebire de tragediile ce au lovit tot în cetăţeni paşnici, nu am mai văzut acea panică generalizată. Era greu de crezut că moartea lovise la doar câţiva paşi de oameni, care, unii dintre ei sângerând, încercau să-şi ajute semenii. Poliţiştii, pompierii şi medicii londonezi păreau la un exerciţiu de rutină, în timp ce toţi pietonii urmau, fără nici cea mai mică împotrivire, indicaţiile oamenilor de ordine. Sunt de admirat pentru calmul lor, la care nu au renunţat nici în cele mai tragice momente. Britanicii sunt învingătorii. Ei şi-au câştigat admiraţia noastră prin demnitatea de a-şi şterge lacrimile şi de a-şi înfrunta inamicul ascuns, în timp ce atacatorii lor provoacă doar scârbă şi mânie. Şi presa din Marea Britanie a câştigat războiul împotriva teroriştilor. Drama londonezilor a fost arătată lumii întregi. Nimeni dintre cei care au privit fotografiile cu autobuzul despicat de suflul exploziei nu a putut rămâne indiferent şi a înţeles că, în ciuda oricăror încercări de a justifica atacul barbar, asasinatele nu pot fi iertate. Fără excepţie, jurnaliştii din Marea Britanie au folosit paginile ziarelor pentru a-şi arăta determinarea în lupta cu răul. Cu siguranţă, nu toţi aprobă decizia autorităţilor de a interveni în Irak, însă nu s-au lansat acuze care să macine solidaritatea tocmai în aceste zile tragice. Totul va reveni la normal şi deja simpaticele autobuze etajate străbat Londra. Teama nu a învins mândria. Să ne întrebăm ce ne-am fi făcut dacă urgia s-ar fi abătut asupra noastră? Orice paralelă între noi şi ei ne-ar amărî şi mai mult. Latini, ne-am fi pus pe bocit şi ne-am fi lăsat pradă unei panici generalizate. Situaţiile de criză nu scot la suprafaţă ceea ce avem mai bun. Doar când suntem “cu cuţitul la os” arătăm că nici noi nu vom fi învinşi niciodată. Dar am învăţat ceva din reacţia Londrei în faţa terorii? Poate că idealul nostru ar trebui să fie acela de a ne integra nu doar în UE, ci şi în Marea Britanie.
