Prietenul meu mai mare

Îmi este extrem de greu să scriu despre cineva plecat dintre noi. Este ca şi cum mi-aş alerga umbra, încercând să refac, fie şi pentru o clipă, ceea ce timpul a risipit pentru totdeauna. Parcă mai alaltăieri m-am despărţit de Romulus Diaconescu, prietenul meu mai mare. M-am întrebat dacă diferenţa de ani nu făcea de-a dreptul imposibilă o amiciţie, chiar şi literară, însă într-una dintre lungile discuţii despre oameni şi cărţi mi-a mărturisit că încă avea puterea să creadă în câţiva tineri. Nu în mulţi, ceea ce mă făcea temător, ca nu cumva să-l deziluzionez sau să nu merit strângerea sa de mână. Şi nici acum nu ştiu dacă am meritat pe deplin încrederea şi prietenia sa.
S-au scurs câţiva ani de la dispariţia sa dintre noi. Zilele trecute, am zâmbit amar când am primit un mesaj în care eram anunţat că se va desfăşura o întâlnire pentru a-l evoca pe Romulus Diaconescu, adică ne vom aduna mai mulţi scriitori şi vom face exerciţii de aducere aminte. Ce am păstrat de la prietenul nostru Romulus şi cât rămâne din scrisul său? Nu puţine lucruri. Mărturisesc sincer că, de la dispariţia sa, am recitit în bună măsură ceea ce a scris. Interviurile sale cu mari personalităţi culturale nu sunt deloc atinse de vreme, fără a avea acele aluviuni conjuncturale dificil de evitat. La recitire trec fără nicio îndoială proba timpului. La fel, proza sa are vigoarea unei construcţii ce trădează spiritul fin al detaliului pe care, îmi place să cred, o au doar fotografii şi jurnaliştii. Nu spun aceste lucruri din prietenie. Îmi place să cred că Romulus Diaconescu rămâne un scriitor cu mult mai important pentru generaţia sa, oraşul său şi, mai ales, cei care l-am cunoscut, chiar decât suntem dispuşi să acceptăm.
Întâmplarea a făcut să fim foarte apropiaţi în ultimii ani ai vieţii sale, dedicaţi presei, scriind la aceeaşi publicaţie. A avut mereu tăria opiniei şi a fost respectat şi pentru acest lucru. În semn de preţuire şi ca semn de neuitare, i-am dedicat prima mea carte de publicistică (lui şi altui prieten dispărut, Patrel Berceanu). Mi-am spus mereu că, trăind în acelaşi oraş şi în preajma aceloraşi oameni, nu se poate ca urmele sale să dispară în neant. De multe ori, aflat în situaţii de care prietenul meu îmi vorbea, mi-am zis că retrăiesc anumite întâmplări prin care el a trecut. Poate că acestea sunt blestemul şi bucuria de trăi în Craiova, mai ştii? Am încercat să împrumut din detaşarea sa târzie în a privi lucrurile şi oamenii. Romulus Diaconescu nu putea urî şi nici nu se putea rupe de prieteni, chiar şi când aceştia uitau să-i mai fie prieteni. Pot depune oricând mărturie că nu-i detesta, oricât de multă răutate ar fi vărsat împotriva sa. A fost un om bun şi un scriitor veritabil. Ceea ce poate părea prea puţin spus dar, credeţi-mă, nu este deloc aşa.
Îmi este atât de dor de el, deşi mi se pare că mai alaltăieri m-am despărţit de Romulus Diaconescu, prietenul meu mai mare.
